Evans. Pine. Hemsworth. Pratt.
Long ago, the four Chrises (kind of) worked together in harmony. Then, everything changed when Thanos attacked. Where the Marvel movies once had three Chrises on their side, Evans splintered off after Endgameto a fate unknown. Pine, who had not done any Marvel movies, was on the rise with a Wonder Woman sequel on his horizon. Pratt and Hemsworth still had a future in the MCU, but with the status quo thus shaken, the question must be asked: Which individual Chris will rise as the premier Chris of 2020?
Chris Pine
Credit: Getty ImagesPine, Pine, Pine. Always the super–bridesmaid and never the super-bride. That may be unfair to Chris Pine, who was fantastic in 2017’s Wonder Woman, but he’s still the non-Marvel Chris to many outside observers. Still, in the upcoming year he has what might be the most promising role of all — a repeat performance as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984. While it’s still unknown how his character survived his alleged death in World War 2, Pine’s comedic chops are primed for playing his own take on a hero guy named Steve caught out of his own time.
Wonder Woman 1984is Pine’s only listed project for 2020. Will it be enough to put him at the top of the heap?
Chris Evans
Credit: Getty ImagesNow that Evans’ Captain America has aged out of the MCU, he’e free to pursue other projects. He has Knives Out, a Rian Johnson movie starring Daniel Craig and Lakeith Stanfield coming out in late November 2019; we’ll count that for 2020 considering it will still be in theaters early in the year. He also has a TV series Defending Jacobwith Michelle Dockery, better known as Lady Mary on Downton Abbey. There’s also Jekyll, a modern-day Jekyll and Hyde movie that may or may not be out in 2020.
With that knowledge, Evans’ supremacy rides on Knives Outbeing a huge hit, which is a strong possibility considering Johnson’s strong fanbase and his stellar supporting cast.
Chris Pratt
Credit: Getty ImagesChris Pratt is a newlywed again as of summer 2019 and appears to be taking it easy while he settles in to re-married life. The only 2020 project he has on IMDB is voicing a character in Pixar’sOnward, which is about...elves? Dragons? It will probably be cute and make everyone cry.
Pratt’s next big outlet will be Jurassic World 3, which comes out in 2021 and is, unfortunately for him, not eligible for this competition.
Chris Hemsworth
Credit: WireImageHemsworth has a stacked 2019 that includes Men in Black Internationaland the Jay and Silent Bobreboot, the latter of which currently has no release date. The next movie he’s working on is an untitled Hulk Hogan biopic, which is still in pre-production.
With nothing solid on the slate for 2020, formerly strong contender Hemsworth is out of the race.
Wild Card: Chris Messina
Credit: FilmMagicBut wait! There is another. A sleeper Chris, a Chris only some people saw coming...Messina. This Chris made waves in 2018 with his performance in HBO’s Sharp Objects, and off the success of that role he landed a gig playing Victor Zsasz in DC’s Birds of Prey. Zsasz’s role in Birds of Preymight be big or small, but the last onscreen adaptation of that spooky Batman villain was Anthony Carrigan’s Zsasz on Gotham— a fan favorite character who stole the show.
Will Zsasz fangirls and villain-lovers buoy Messina to the top of the heap? Who knows! Keep an eye on this one though. Everyone loves an underdog.
Winner: Chris Pine!
Slow and steady wins this race, as the Marvel Chrises rest on their laurels after shooting Avengers: Endgameand allow Chris Pine to surge to the front of the pack. Wonder Woman 1984is sure to be a massive summer blockbuster, and none of the other guys have anything close to it lined up for the next year. Unless Messina, whose Zsasz is also part of Wonder Woman’s DCEU, shows up with something truly special, 2020 will finally be the Year of Pine.
